Merlin at 9 weeks
Merlin arrived at our house on February 6th. In that time, he went from 3 pounds to 23 pounds, and has grown five times his original size. I am convinced that Merlin arrived at our house to “shake things up” and to help us to re-focus on the moment.
For those of you that have had puppies in the house, you are aware that you cannot take your eyes off them while you are house training them, and especially when they start teething. They will take a bit out of anything, including you. One of my friends told me about her dog, and, how as a puppy, Shadow lunged at her and bit my friend’s lip to the point where my friend required several stitches. She has the scar to this day.
I digress, however. What I started to say was that Merlin keeps us in the present moment. When you are in that time, you lose the past and the future. Because of this focus on the moment, we have been able to more clearly see what our path is, and to make changes to help us along the path. Like hummingbird, Merlin has taught us that each moment can hold its own sweetness, and that the joy of the moment can lift one’s spirits like nothing else. Like jaguar, Merlin has taught us what it is like to be cautiously fearless. As he explores each day, and moves farther afield in accepting other dogs and other people, he shows us that it takes some courage to go and to make new friends. He has taught us that he knows how to identify those who will not be friends, and to stay clear of them.
Merlin still gets up at least once a night to go out – at three months he is house trained – so we do not get a peaceful night’s sleep. We ARE grateful though, that he does get us up and that he is learning household rules very quickly. And, he is teaching us about playing – sometimes in the middle of the night, for just a bit, and then we all sleep better.
Life has changed, for the better.
